ABSTRACT
Survey in architectural education –
Monument survey drawings from the first eight decades of architectural education before 1945
Nowadays architectural survey more and more refers to laser scanning. Laser-based, digital technology by
all means provides a large-scale development in architectural design and scientific research of monuments,
however the irreplaceable advantages of traditional manual survey are also important to emphasise. The Plan
Collection and Archives of the Department of History of Architecture and Monument Preservation contains a
large amount of survey drawings from the 19th-century beginning of architectural education, that proves and
also draws the attention to the importance of the educational role of survey. Throughout the drawings from
the first eight decades of university level architectural formation, the relation of survey to design, research and
education can be studied by the oeuvre of three architect-professor-generation.
